@ocifant: Yet, to some degree- by taking the test, you're making the following statements:
a. I'm promiscuous OR b. I've had a partner I don't trust OR c. I don't ask my partners before I engage in sex (see a:) OR d. I'm naturally paranoid and therefore test myself for everything
none of these are going to be good for an insurance company....:)
Still, interestingly - my NHS authority/district/thing has sent me letters saying "since you're in xx age bracket, you're most at risk from chlamydia, therefore if you call this private number and leave your address, we'll send you a testing kit which you can send back for confirmation, privately/confidentially, for free" -- i'd much rather that it was out in the open (as above) but at least access to testing is being provided...

@whatleydude: further, when ads for condoms which are sexually euphemistic (oh, really??) are banned because of decency issues; when certain right-leaning organisations still promote abstinence-only programs, where sex-ed has been proven beyond ALL doubt to be the ONLY way to mitigate STIs, unwanted pregnancy, (and in some cases rape) - There is no reason whatsoever that the western world should still have STI problems... it's elective disease. We can eradicate small pox, and we're pretty good on innoculating most other nasty stuff - but yet people still die from STI- sex needs to be reclaimed from social/moral/religious debate and turned into a purely health issue. Yes, it's going to happen - and here's how to keep ourselves safe doing so.

@whatleydude: no idea when they expire. i think you can hold onto one for a year or two, but the risk of them splitting is increased or something. I think a side problem is not the lack of availability - you can get free condoms from any health center, most colleges / unis etc.. but it's the lack of open-ness and transparency us Brits have about sex. We seem unable to do two things: harness our desire long enough to go out and get a pack - and be up front with our partners about our status.. Then again, desire will always override responsibility... if we can just train ourselves to suit up before we go spelunking - EVERYTIME - then alot of the problems go away...
